PlumbingPlumbing

Home plumbing in simple terms

Professional plumbers advise homeowners to do plumbing maintenance at least once a year and that is precisely what you should.
There are lots of areas to be covered as far as plumbing is concerned by here is a quick outline of the plumbing topics that we think you should cover.

Water Heaters

To perform plumbing maintenance, let's start with the water heater. Turn off the water heater, drain it, open and close the inlet valve a few times (for effective plumbing, do this until the water that comes out is clear), dismantle the valve, remove the sacrificial abode, replace the parts that needs to be replaced and check for rust. While checking the plumbing and maintaining the water heater, it is best that you ensure that you replace parts before it all falls apart, don't wait.

When checking the plumbing, check the Gas HWT while you're at it

Check and see if the Gas HWT is at least 18" off the floor.

Checking the plumbing of the toilets

For most of us homeowners, checking and maintaining the plumbing of the toilets is the most dreaded, the messiest and hardest to check. Generally speaking, you should call a professional plumber who is experienced in plumbing to come and take a look at your toilets at least once a year. For the average user, it's hard to understand the kind of plumbing structure that has been installed in our homes. Professional plumbing experts will know without having to look at it because if they've been in the plumbing business long enough, they know the make of the homes in your area and the kind of plumbing system that has been installed there.
So, give your local plumber a call and see if they make a plumbing house call to your home any time soon. As we said earlier, it is better not to wait until things starts falling apart before calling the plumber. It's not too expensive to get the plumbing expert to come in and take a look once a year, after all.
If you have a low flush toilet problem, make sure you mention this to the plumbing expert making the house call. Most air assisted toilets flush quite well, even after extended use. Modern toilets are normally installed with gravity assisted toilets which sometimes wear down quite easily. Thankfully, most gravity assisted toilets flush well.

Plumbing problems occur when there's high pressure

Does your toilet ‘run' whenever there's high pressure? The plumbing expert can easily fix that. Installing a new pressure reducing valve will usually fix the problem easily. Sometimes, you may not even need the advice of a plumbing expert. To ensure the best plumbing system, invest in a pressure regulator in your home if the pressure to your home is more than 60 pounds.
